Common Dental Emergencies

Once you've noticed that something is wrong, call our office to schedule an emergency appointment. Depending on the time of day, we should be able to get you in same day. In the meantime, here are a few things you should do to minimize the pain and damage.

Toothaches

Remove food debris from between your teeth using dental floss. If pain continues, you can take an Ibuprofen. Do not take aspirin, as it can cause a burning sensation in your mouth. Apply a cold compress to your cheek for 10 minutes to reduce swelling and provide relief.

Knocked-Out Tooth

Stay calm, locate the tooth, and bring it to the office. Handle it by the crown only and do not remove any tissue. Rinse your mouth out with warm water, and remove any dirt or debris from the tooth. Try to place it into your open socket. If necessary, you can keep it in a container of saltwater or milk until you get to our office. Doing so within an hour will improve your chances of re-implanting the tooth.

Chipped/Broken Tooth

Collect and save any pieces of the tooth that you can find and bring them with you to our office. If swelling starts, use a cold compress for 10 minutes on, then 10 minutes off. Repeat for an hour.

Lost Filling/Crown

Avoid chewing on the side of your mouth that's lost the filling/crown. If you still have the filling/crown, you can attempt to reattach it to your tooth using dental cement, or denture adhesive.

Preventing Dental Emergencies

Dental emergencies, in general, are unpredictable. However, there are ways to reduce the risk of them happening. It’s advised that you:

  • Brush twice a day with a fluoridated toothpaste and floss daily
  • Maintain routine checkups and cleanings once every 6 months
  • Never use your teeth as a tool to open packages or bottles
  • Wear a mouth-guard when participating in contact sports
  • Address habits that damage teeth (i.e. nail-biting, chewing on pens and pencils, teeth grinding and clenching throughout the night, etc.)
